Introduced in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain is the single TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level names remained working.
